Wine and Grilling

Grilling and Wine Pairing

It’s Grilling Season!

Summer is here and everyone is grilling from now until Labor Day. But do you drink wine with your grilled specialties?  The answer is YES and here s a little guide to help you choose the right wine for your dishes. From light whites to bold reds, there is a wine for pairing.

Let’s start with a fan favorite, Hot Dogs, specifically the ones with mustard and sauerkraut.  Whether you like spicy mustard or extra sauerkraut, you cannot go wrong with a German Riesling.  The acidity of the German Riesling is perfect with the sauerkraut and the spiciness of the mustard. Not a fan of the sauerkraut or spicy mustard, give a dry Riesling a try.

How about grilled oysters? Well, I’m glad you asked.  The saltiness of the oysters and the salinity in an Albarino go hand in hand. A nice squeeze of lemon on those oysters plays well with nice citrus notes of an Albarino.

For vegetarian options, lets discuss Grilled Corn. There is nothing like fresh corn right off the grill with a little swipe of butter and a dash of salt. A Chardonnay with some oak aging is the perfect complement for a fresh ear of corn. Another fantastic frilled vegetarian option is grilled Portobello Mushroom Steaks.  That earthy flavor and hearty texture are the perfect pairing for Pinot Noir. Cool climate Pinot Noir like that form the Willamette Valley in Oregon have less fruit flavors and display more of the earthy notes that are perfect for pairing with mushrooms.

Grilled Salmon is personally one of my favorites. And what pairs with grilled Salmon may you ask? Well another favorite of mine is a Sangiovese Rose’ or Provence Rose’. Both wines are made from bolder red wines and stand up to salmon with their body.

We cannot talk about grilling without mentioning Cheeseburgers or Steak. The classic burger with lettuce, tomato and onion pairs well with Sangiovese also known as Chianti from Italy. This high tannin red wine cuts through the heartiness of the burger and make it the perfect compliment. What do you think is the suggestion for steak? It’s no surprise that Cabernet Sauvignon is the perfect pairing for a grilled steak.  This big, bold, tannic, red wine is exactly what the perfectly seasoned grilled steak needs.
